Hi Linda. Try these:
www.copyright.com <http://www.copyright.com/> www.harryfox.com <http://www.harryfox.com/> www.songfile.com <http://www.songfile.com/> www.ascap.com/licensing <http://www.ascap.com/licensing> www.bmi.com/licensing <http://www.bmi.com/licensing> www.sesac.com/licensing/licensing1.asp <http://www.sesac.com/licensing/licensing1.asp> to find points of law (Title 17, US Code) www.findlaw.com/casecode/uscodes/ <http://www.findlaw.com/casecode/uscodes/> We had a copyright attorney come speak to a media group here at SLCC. These URLs came from his handout. He spoke of various types of licenses that impacted videographers such as "sync" licenses and "mechanical" licenses....and that various licensing issues surrounded all the differing types of uses; whether use of a movie clip vs use of a well known artist's music. After listening to him, I got the feeling that each use of another's creative work had implied copyright issues. Whether that person has "registered" their copyright or not factored in to whether they'd have any teeth in a legal battle over unfair use. His main point seemed to center in small licensing fees being required by the copyright owner as a means of acknowledging their creative work, not so much as a means of making them rich. I don't know which of the above links best would answer your question. I've wondered the same question myself many times....but each time, I fall back to my licensed music library from NonStop Music. Client wants to use a pop tune..... Where would I learn more? Thanks, Linda _____ YAHOO!
