Does she really need a capture card?  If you have a firewire port on the 
computer, you can still input and output video on the computer.  The 
only advantage a CAPTURE card offers is real-time preview and some 
effects that don't come with Premiere.  Adrianne, you say the computer 
is pretty fast (Alienware, huh... I'll bet it was smoking when it was 
new!) and I'll bet it has a firewire port either on the motherboard or 
as an add-on card.  Have you tried using just the firewire for 
capturing?  It probably will satisfy your hobby needs.
