Right. And another issue that keeps one on their feet is that the content
ratios may vary. For instance my JVC cameras can produce either 1440x1080
with pixel ratio 1.33 or 1920x1080 pixel ratio 1.0 (square). Adobe Premiere
Pro can accommodate them both, of course. But a computer monitor is always
(I believe) square pixels so the software must be doing a little bit of
conversion when displaying non-square pixels on a computer screen, but doing
a different conversion when writing to a DVD for ultimate wide-screen TV
presentation.

No, PC monitors are almost universally 1:1 pixel aspect ratio (meaning
pixels are square, not stretched). Wider screens have more horizontal
pixels, so you see more of the timeline etc. There may be the odd
exception, but it's very rare.

For example, the 19" 16:10 widescreen monitor I'm typing this on (PC wide
monitors are generally 16:10 rather than TVs 16:9) has a native resolution
of 1440 x 900.

1440 / 900 = 1.6, ie. 16:10. ie. the resolution matches the shape of the
screen, so it's using square pixels.
