I'll have to use esata or usb 3.0, I assume, for HD, since I'm on PC laptops
with 4 pin firewire (FW400).

Stan

PS and I edit in ProRes422 format converted from HDSLR, I guess this
is comparable to P2 material. I've even tried editing ProResHQ which
creates 30% larger files and had no speed issues with that either.

I think USB3 is faster than FireWire2 and I do all my video editing
on external FW2 drives and never have a speed issue. The only thing
that causes delays sometimes is hwen the drives went asleep and have
to start spinning again. Even though I turned that off in my Apple
  tkey keep doing it.
