For what it's worth, sometimes a little social engineering can help
provide copy protection.

I used to sell trip videos on a live-aboard dive boat in Fiji: I'd
shoot for a week or so and put together a video at the end of each
charter to sell to 18 possible passengers on board. The trip DVD cost
US$95, and if you look at it as just a $95 DVD, that seems pretty steep.

I always told everyone at the beginning of the charter that I'd be
providing custom video service for the group. For anyone who wanted
to take advantage of the service, it was $95, and I'd deliver the
final product on DVD. That way it didn't seem like it was just an
expensive DVD, and people were a little less likely to cheat by duplicating it.

I also had a trip video viewing on the last night aboard as we were
steaming into port, usually after dinner when people were lively and
had knocked back a few beers. We all had a good time, and I took
orders for the video just after the viewing when people were jazzed about it.

I had pretty good luck for the most part, although occasionally just
one person in a large group would buy the DVD and I had a good idea
he'd be duplicating it for the rest of them when they got back home.

True DVD copy protection wouldn't have helped me much because I'd
have to tell passengers about it before they bought, otherwise they'd
assume they could copy and would still buy just one for a group. I'd
lose those sales because once people left Fiji they weren't likely to
buy another DVD. Telling people the DVDs are copy protected would
piss enough people off that some might not buy, so I think it would
have been a wash to copy protect my trip videos.

Ah, well. I wasn't in it to make big money anyway.
