A simple answer is : the bigger the better.
The minimum size would be one giving you enough time to properly shut down
all the equipment hooked up to it, say 5 to 10 minutes.
One thing you must also remember is that the batteries will not last 
forever so it is
good practice to simulate a power failure and check how much time you 
still get
out of the UPS.
Another advantage of a UPS is that it takes "spikes" out of your power 
supply.

Joe, does anyone still do a long render? Well, my steam driven computer 
took 26hours
last year for a 2 hour video. A power cut during that time would make a 
UPS rather useless.
I guess before I get CS6 I should rather get a "more modern":-)    computer.
