Something else to remember is that while the batteries are replaceable, 
the components that prevent surges are not, or so I am told, and have a 
shelf life. Similar to a fuse, if they protect you from a serious surge 
once, that may be all they have to give. The power backup does continue 
to work. I don't know a way to test or monitor surge suppression.

Heck, I put an old UPS on my digital clock in my office, I got tired of 
resetting it every time the powered winked.
