Thanks Alan.

I checked all my external drives (I have two
storage towers and 13 individual external G-Tech
and WD drives) again, and all have eSata
connectors. eSata is faster than FW800, the
downside is that eSata drives can't be chained
like FW drives can, so I definitely have to stay
away from motherboards that only have 1 eSata
connector if I want to be able to move data
around between drives. I compared all Asus and
MSI boards; only two mid-range Asus Z77 boards have two eSata connectors:

ASUS P8Z77-M PRO µATX (2 PCIe slots)
ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE (3 PCIe slots)

So this is one micro-ATX and the other one is the
one you suggested, Alan. I think I'll go for that
one, then if I ever need drivers in the future I
can just bug you and we can set up our own
P8Z77-V DELUXE yahoogroup. hehehe. I would start
with 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD and one 3TB 7200rpm
Seagate for video data storage. I haven't decided
on the video board yet. Alan suggested to use the
on-board videochip, Neil suggested to get as much
as CUDAs as possible. I await his reaction to the article/test I referred to.

Another thing I'll definitely add now or in the
future is a high quality audio board for home
recording/mixing. I do a bit of electric guitar
and synth playing. Any advice/suggestions for this are very welcome.

As for future strategy, I'll forget about
Firewire and Thunderbolt and will purchase
storage towers with USB3 or LAN only from now on.
For capturing my old SD/HDV tapes I can continue
using my Apple, sooner or later all my tapes will
be captured, which will be the end of the Firewire era for me.

Also Neil, I checked out the new 6 core
processor, didn't even know they existed, but
this is really too fancy for me. I'm used to do
my editing on a 3 year old MacBookPro with 4GB
RAM and all-drives, I think I will be very happy
with the 4 core Ivy Bridge with 16GB RAM and SSD.
