Put a line entry in the client dsm.opt file for :-

VERBOSE
Get the user to reload the scheduler on the client  to pick up the change
Then next time the backup runs get your user to send you the client schedule
log.
You will then be able to see exactly whether particular files are taking a long
time, whether there are
lots of retries or if  it is just a large number of small files, evenly spread.

PS remember to get verbose removed and scheduler reloaded after you have got the
details.
