Hi Doug, yes - the scratch tapes need to be checked in to the library in
order for the backup and other processes to use them. If there are no
scratch tapes then you will receive the same error. ADSM/TSM does not issue
a request for scratch tapes. Also, if you assign those scratch tapes to a
storage pool, then your other processes that require a scratch tape will
fail. If you have the available room in your library, you might want to put
a bunch of scratch tapes in, unassigned. Then you can monitor your activity
for a while and get a rough idea of how many scratch tapes you go through in
a day/weekend/week, ect. That is what I have done. Now before long weekends
or out-of-town trainings I can add as many scratch tapes as needed.
