Well, I understand once having database backup time of 3 hours you do not want to sacrifice so many system ressorces just for an additional db backup copy.
Another thoughts: perform regular database backups to either local or distinct disk an cpio/tar it to tape. Tapes created with cpio should not cause any problems for dd. Or run cpio/tar twice to get 2 tapes. But not so during weekends. TSM Disks and tape storage reside physically side by side so a db backup to disk at the same physical location doesn't make really sense. The idea was simply to "virtually" vault the db backup cartridge by the means of OS to remote disks via Gigabit ethernet. And getting cheap copies of db backups is also a charming approach.
