Paul, Have you tried other backup methods and found they don't impact performance? Maybe you could try using one of the applications listed here http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/submitted/backup_recovery.html and see if the performance impact is less than with TSM. I suspect it won't be. If the native backup applications cause the same issues as the TSM backup, I'd say it's time for more resources. If not, then TSM tuning might be in order.
