The focus of this first callfor proposals is on two research tools: Archives and Constituencies. The research programme of the Van Abbe will explore Deviant Practice Deviance can be understood as veering away from the entrenched path. Forthe modern art museum these paths emerged from the West’sunderstanding of itself and by inference its relationship to others. Anexploration of deviant practice necessarily involves undoing long-heldinstitutional, racial, geo and bio political formations. We thereforeunderstand the prefix "de" ("off") in deviance in relation to notionsof demodernising, decolonising, deprivelleging ordeneoliberalising—key strategies we are inviting researchers toexplore. Questioning past suppositions, hierarchies and modes of workingmight be one way to institute deviance. But deviance must also concernitself with modes of thinking and practicing for the future. The Van Abbe is seeking proposals that draw on two research tools: –Archives: The Van Abbe understands the archive as encompassingthe collection of art works, the library’s collection and themuseum’s paper archives. Archives are what defines a museum. It is,for better or worse, the heritage we hold. If deviant practice holds withinit the need to challenge, consider and undo entrenched paths, the archivewould appear to offer the means with which to do that. We are, therefore, seeking proposals that interrogate the role and use of the archive. –Constituencies: Today more than ever, the museum cannotdefine its subjects. It needs to understand them and form positions withthem. Understanding how to work with and through different constituenciestherefore seems vital when thinking about how to institute deviantpractice. Yet it also has implications for how the museum works with itsarchives and building. By identifying it as a research tool we hope toallow the possibility to explore different means and methods to work withconstituencies. About the grant Researchers will be expected to present an internal seminar for museumcolleagues at the start of their research and a public paper forpublication within the Van Abbe and/or L’Internationale digitalplatforms in summer 2017. Residency in Eindhoven is not expected but researchers will able to makeuse of the museum’s free accommodation, depending on availability.Limited travel costs may be covered. Researchers will work with aninterlocutor at the museum from either the curatorial, mediation, libraryor collection departments. Research proposals We are hoping for proposals that challenge our expectations. In addition tothe museum’s archives and histories we invite researchers to considerthe following resources and areas: Archives: Arte Útil, Gate Foundation, LS Collection, RenéDaniëls Van Abbemuseum Programmes: Agents of Change, Special Guests Exhibition and Institutional Practice: Curatorial histories, Europeanmuseum histories. Proposals should be sent to [email protected] by May 20,2016 Please send a PDF, including a text no longer than 750 words. Images may beembedded in the PDF, but should not be sent as separate files.
