Yes, I've seen the same floor strips in various museums. But in Detroit, no
strips no ropes, no glass. You can get within an inch of some great paintings,
one of them a Jan Van Eyck! The museum was nearly empty, no guards in sight.
Just a few very alert docent volunteers. It reminded us of Vienna, where
docents followed us from room to room all the way through...maybe they were
assigned to us). In Detroit we parked right in front of the museum at a meter
for 2 bucks! It is a truly a beautiful museum in a near empty city. Terrific
late medieval work.

I've seen a lot of shows in the NC Museum of Art, big traveling shows and
major exhibitions of their own (destined for traveling), and in almost all of
them in the last few years, they've nailed little lath strips to the floor
about 3 feet from the wall, a line not to be crossed, and if you even lean
forward to look closely at the surface detail, a guard walks up and very
seriously asks you to lean back. Apparently the moisture and gases in one's
breath is destructive!
