Can you plug a single LC into a duplex LC connector?

I would say there is a standard dimension square hole that can either be one SC 
or duplex LC and is the only thing I would think ever be needed. You can always 
add your own then.

  Can you use a double connector to join single jumpers?  I have never tried.  

  Working on a combo DC surge suppressor with fiber storage and a place for the 
fiber connectors.  I will have to have some sheet metal holders for the mini 
patch panel and am working out how many different cut out holes I will have to 
offer to cover all the potential uses.  If I have one that will do two double 
LC connectors and a second option for two double SC, will that take care of 
most applications?
