We had to have 4WD, so something like the Transit would have been
nice (storage-wise), the cost of adding 4WD was prohibitive.

We have an ARE for the Tacoma. It's OK at best.
Having cabinets on the side is more storage, we still have most
of the truck bed to use, and it has a really nice aluminum rack
with a roller to make the ladder easy up/down. Quality is good,
we've replaced that back lock a few times due to use/vandalism
though and the aluminum fingers we replaced after 6 years due to
wear.
If you have to have a truck, it's good. I'd strongly
recommend a Ford Transit with the shelving over for installs
though.

We used ARE because the ladder racks had "outriggers".
The Lear and one other we looked at kind of bulged out
such that doing an R&R for the topper would have been
a pain. As it happens, we never removed the topper, so it
may not have made any difference.

What brand of topper are you using?
We have had a
local shop called Custom Trucks do all of that
stuff. This
is in Redwood City, CA, but I'm sure every metro
area has something
similar. For us it's a one-stop shop. They did the
bed slide, shell, and
ladder rack in one go.
