When I was a kid, I used to catch gopher snakes all the time, along with
garter snakes, king snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, etc. I would put them in
an ice cream bucket for transport home. I recall one day catching a gopher
snake and upon getting it home I started to remove the lid from the bucket.
As I was doing so, out of the bucket came an intense rattling. It wasn't
the normal rattlesnake sound, though. It was more of a very rapid
hollow-sounding tapping. Regardless, I probably threw that bucket 20 feet.
The lid popped off, and out came the snake. I went over to look (keeping
my distance, of course). Didn't look like a rattler. No rattles on the
tail, and big enough that it wasn't a baby. If it had been a rattlesnake it
would definitely have had rattles. And of course, the head was not that
tell-tale triangle shape. I found out later that gopher snakes will pretend
to be rattlesnakes. Since they don't have rattles, like Sam said, they'll
rattle their tails against something. In this case, the side of the ice
cream bucket. Scared me nearly to death that day.
