The one that bit me, left me hospitalized for a week and my arm as big as my
leg. So irrespective of what it had on its tail, not an experience I would
want to repeat.

When I was a kid, I used to catch gopher snakes all the time, along with garter
snakes, king snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, etc. I would put them in an ice
cream bucket for transport home. I recall one day catching a gopher snake and
upon getting it home I started to remove the lid from the bucket. As I was
doing so, out of the bucket came an intense rattling. It wasn't the normal
rattlesnake sound, though. It was more of a very rapid hollow-sounding tapping.
Regardless, I probably threw that bucket 20 feet. The lid popped off, and out
came the snake. I went over to look (keeping my distance, of course). Didn't
look like a rattler. No rattles on the tail, and big enough that it wasn't a
baby. If it had been a rattlesnake it would definitely have had rattles. And of
course, the head was not that tell-tale triangle shape. I found out later that
gopher snakes will pretend to be rattlesnakes. Since they don't have rattles,
like Sam said, they'll rattle their tails against something. In this case, the
side of the ice cream bucket. Scared me nearly to death that day.

And now looking closer at the picture, the head of the guy in the tube is
actually protruding a little and it is clearly a Gopher Snake/ Bull Snake. I
would bet my ISP on it.

You can actually see one of the tails of the coiled up guy in the picture
that ends in a point. His head is partially buried in his coil. They are
definitely not Rattlesnakes.

Yeah, they are really good at emulating rattlesnakes by buzzing their
tails against leaves or in your case, the box or tube. A survival tactic that
obviously works well.

Really? The intense rattling coming from their tail would suggest
otherwise...

Western Gopher Snakes. Harmless. Can bite though, but not poisonous.
Don't kill them.
