Yeah, I think that’s a common misconception, that most of the Hispanics you see are illegal immigrants, or even immigrants. No doubt some are, but most aren’t.
It’s probably like the stereotype of Indian convenience store owners. The reason is they are willing to put up the money and hard work to acquire a franchise, and it probably helps to have relatives to help staff the place. If white guys were willing to do the same, they could have a 7-Eleven or Subway franchise. Or I look at all the Hispanic lawn and landscaping services by me. It’s not just cheap labor. These guys are good businessmen and are willing to buy the top commercial equipment so they are very efficient. Often neighbors will also sign up with them, so they show up and do a bunch of adjacent properties. I have no reason to believe any of them are undocumented. If all the Hispanic workers went away, a lot of the farms around here – especially the ones with animals – couldn’t operate. Yes the turkey farm can hire a bunch of high school kids before Thanksgiving to pluck turkeys, but getting them to work on a pig farm will be difficult unless it’s a family operation. Another area is roofing. 90% of the roofing crews I see are all Hispanic, even if the owners aren’t. You start at 7am and work hard until sundown and then do it again the next day, often 6 days a week. Tree services are also heavily Hispanic, although some of the really expert arborists that you see taking down really big trees where you’re up in the bucket of a giant lift with a 4 ft chainsaw and have to know how to rope down big chunks of tree without them falling on the customer’s house, those still tend to be white guys, but not all. People who chose to move to another country in search of opportunity are generally desperate or very motivated to improve their lot. We could use a hell of a lot more immigrants in this country, especially in rural areas, but that, like everything else in the world infringes on lent. He passes the first interview. Passes the second interview (had to go to two different places for the interviews). Supposed to start today. No-show. Called him to see if he is OK he hangs up on us. Sad to say, this is the norm. Out of 100 applications, 10 will actually agree to an interview. Maybe 3 will show up. We will hire 1 and he will not show up or last out the week. Indeed works pretty good to find people and I am paying for it, but wow. Go to all the effort of interviewing, we do a background check now for driving problems, and then a no show.
