Safety glasses are cheap insurance. If you buy them in bulk they are less than $1/pair. A good buddy of mine who restores classic cars for a living was using a bench mounted buffer to clean up a headlight bezel. No safety glasses, because no sparks. He lost his grip for a split second and the buffing pad caught the edge of the bezel, ran it once around and shot it right at his eye. Sliced his cheek, eyebrow, and eyeball open. 3 surgeries to correct and he ruined his 20/20 vision. It only takes a second.
