You can use it for 100000 servers. But it still won't do certain things that
make managing all of them easy.

Strange.

Friends of mine have used Proxmox in installations where there were many, many
racks full of servers.

Here is the alternative I was looking at. Since Xen didn't do paravirtual
before but it does now.

https://xcp-ng.org/

Proxmox too many things its missing to list here. Its great for basic usage 2-3
servers definitely. I'd use it in a heartbeat if I was a small operation.

What features is Proxmox missing that vSphere has (and you need\use)?

Proxmox also has a backup server now, though I haven't really looked at it.

Oh the combo.. couldn't help you there :) Proxmox looks cool.. but still
doesn't have the features Vmware does. But I hear now there is some pretty good
xen material out there now. It has advanced much further than it used to be.
Trying to find the link but the manager you need to pay for but its a fraction
of Vmware.

Ive been running vmware and veeam forever, i love it, but we are getting priced
out of continuing to use it. upgrading either is always a cumbersome task.

Having been using what is probably the simplest virtualization/backup combo out
there I'm guessing anything we move to will have a massive learning curve for
me,

What combos are out there that dont break the bank and are reliable as this?
