I was the first to jump to it being either an inside job or someone that really had an axe to grind with the owner. The effort involved in stealing a tower would not be worth the value of the scrap steel I would not think.

In my home county we have two licensed AMS, 1340 and 1460. 1460 has been off air for at least 5 years, but never filed as silent and still shows as licensed. 1340 signed off last week - the property had been abandoned, seized for unpaid taxes, auctioned from the federal government (all by the guy currently running it), and now it's being sold for a development of houses. Good for them.....
