Thanks, I will take a look.

Ah, ok. Well, you can easily receive traps (and transform/alert/blah/do
whatever you want) with Zen.

It might be overkill if that is all you need it for, though.

The mapping should be handled by Mapcom. Not really sure all the benefits
that come by integrating it but it is something we own and I figured I may as
well see what it can do.

At the moment I am probably just going to write a trap receiver in C++ or C#
and an alarm client so everyone can have real time trap monitoring.

  We use Zenoss and Observium.

Zenoss for more "powerful" things like custom datasources, alerting, etc.

Observium for a simple look into the environment.

Neither offer very advanced mapping platforms, though. You can feed Zenoss
GPS coordinates to plot things on a map.

What does your mapping department need from the NMS? Seems like you at
least need a way to attach GPS coordinates to a node, or to retrieve said
coordinates from the node. In fact, I'm pretty sure that MRTG, being very
basic does not even have a database.

OK, so the query was buried in another email. So, to make it a bit more
explicit, here is the question:
What do you like for NMS?

I need something that will integrate with software used by my mapping
department. The software they use will work with a whole bunch of different
NMS packages (it claims). I have only worked with PRTG and MRTG in the past.
Seems that Solarwinds seems popular with the mapping software people but there
are many more.

If I do this right, we will have a real time system map showing all our
fiber and all our active electronics with current alarms and status. I think...
