In Scotland, they deep fry Mars bars.

Chimichanga however came from Arizona. Only here in the
US would someone look at a burrito and say “what if I deep
fried that”? This is the country that brought you deep
fried Twinkies, bacon, and sticks of butter. That’s no
stereotype. I assume somewhere we have deep fried hummus.
I will say the thought of roast salmon is making me
hungry. I remember some place named Ivar’s Salmon House.

I
wouldn't say the image is entirely a cartoon
stereotype... from my time in Pakistan and Afghanican, if
you like spicy kebabs of all varieties and fresh baked flat
breads, you will enjoy the food there. Saying that a taco is
a stereotype is like saying that a roast salmon is a pacific
northwest stereotype. We actually do eat quite a lot of
salmon in Vancouver.

I’ve only been to Israel once, long time ago, but
the food was excellent. Didn’t see hummus, falafel
or matzo once. Never left Tel Aviv though. I was
there to kick the tires at Orckit Communications,
looks like they still exist under the same
management, some ex military communications guys.
Israel has quite the military-industrial complex,
quite the revolving door between government and
private enterprise in the communications space. At
the time I was told the best and brightest could go
to university and then fulfill their universal
service by working as engineers for the government,
then move into industry.
Somehow I suspect the image of both Mexican and
Middle Eastern food here in the US is pretty much a
cartoon stereotype. I will say however that I’ve
been to England and the food there is just as bad as
its reputation. I will also say the worst food on
my trip to Israel was the Air France airplane food,
which seemed strange given the Mike Royko quote that
the French had many faults but they do know how to
whip up a plate of grub.

This Irish Catholic is
not sure of that, but I can tell you
that after working for 3 different
Israeli companies, they take better
care of their employees than any
other employers I've had the
experience working for. If you value
being left alone and treated with
respect, and where family ALWAYS
comes first, you could do much
worse.
