More than likely the semi trailer that your package is on is hitting railroad RFID sensors. BNSF runs by our office every 10 to 30 minutes in both directions. That's the line that runs Chicago to LA. I used to like trains. They need to invent hover trains already.

Alll the FedEx trailers have their own GPS. My guess is they are polled and packages are already linked to a trailer. Trailer updates and it flows down the the database to your package.

I wouldn't expect them to change trailers, but possibly drivers
and headend power. If nothing else, fuel at their Giant Bulk rate

That sounds pretty reasonable. It wouldn't make much sense to
scan the box and move it between trailers, I don't think...

I'm having a package shipped Ground out of California, and it
has interesting tracking updates. I'm guessing it's on a
truck driving across the country, but the tracking updates
are coming from these little podunk towns. They are towns
that border the interstate, but don't seem to have any sort
of inter-modal or Transfer yard, and barely a Truckstop. Does the truck that my box is on just randomly check in, and
they update the tracking? I would have expected to see
updates at like Denver, or Omaha or Des Moines, where they'd
go to a fedex yard and fuel/change drivers.
