Interesting .. that definitely would have been early days ... I had a lengthy webex session with one of their architects when they were building the last generation (6 years ago if I recall) - was sharing an architecture I had implemented for a provider in Europe that had about the same requirements. There is clustering built into it and obviously AOL did use a custom system. When I really admin-ed it, we handled 10s of thousands of email accounts with it on thousands of hosted domains.
