I used to buy tamper evident stickers at great cost - the good quality ones
are not cheap, even in bulk...

such as that type, or the ones that break into tiny pieces if you try to
peel them off. It became much easier to use an engraver to etch a
custom-series unique serial number into the bottom of each thing, separated
by dashes so it's easier for people to memorize and type. The engraver
method doesn't let you use barcodes or QR codes, so that's a hassle, and it
does take 15-20 seconds per device...

Tamper evident sticker residue can be easily removed with solvent. I
suppose so can an engraving, if somebody is willing to take a piece of
sandpaper to a device, but it leaves much more obvious damage.
