I like to do that too, but only with companies I know well and expect a change based on something they are doing.

I would never invest long term (over a year) in a single stock... all of my long term investments are in mutual funds, etc from places like Vanguard and Oppenheimer and T Rowe Price. They are seeing 6-10% annual returns depending on which fund (I currently have eight).
