I'm in Milan for the MUM Europe and we've been eating Authentic Italian all
week. Staying in the city center and the conference is in a more "rural"
area. Not a lot of access to places to eat, so apparently everyone goes to
the food court in the shopping mall next to the conference center. I came
last weekend with the family to enjoy a bit of Italy. After eating the good
stuff all week we decided that mall-Italian just wasn't our thing, so since
they had a "Mexican" restaurant, we figured we'd see how bad they butchered
it. Nice presentation, but other than the slight tex-mex appearance, there
wasn't much else familiar about it. The nachos tasted like they borrowed
some Bolegnese sauce from the pasta place next door and smeared it on the
chips and melted some cheese over it, topped it with another chip and then
added some guac and sour cream. The "quesadilla" was more like a
quesa-whata. It was like ham and provolone melted between a tortilla. It
all wasn't inedible, just not Mexican or even Tex-mex. The upside, there
was a bottle of Herradura Anejo sitting on the bar and I asked the
bartender in broken itali-portuguese if he knew how to make a margarita. He
said yes and when I pointed to the herra dura, he shook his head no. I said
yes, and he relented. He did a damn good job. I'm not sure if it was
because it was almost all tequila or what, but it made the meal enjoyable,
or at least tolerable.
