Andries Oliphant, one of South Africa's premier novelists and literary
academics says in this exclusive AND feature that South African
writing is "unavoidably distorted by low literacy rates, a weak
reading culture, unaffordable book prices, limited commercial outlets,
inadequate libraries, low visibility of writers and books in the mass
media, insufficient training for writers, the demise of small
independent publishers and poverty, unemployment and crime." Yet, he
says, there is singular promise in the quality of literature in this
nation of two Nobel Literature Prize winners. 


"... Many hoped that the unshackling of these languages would
revitalize African language writing and precipitate a flowering akin
to that of early 20th century ..."
