Senate to Resist Plan to Close Language Institute >From Sufuyan Ojeifo in Abuja, 06.25.2008 http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=115097 Senate has vowed to stop alleged plot to abrogate the National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Aba. The position of the Senate came on the heels of a protest by traditional rulers from Abia State, who stormed the Upper House yesterday. They were protesting alleged marginalisation of the South-east, through "the forceful abrogation NINLAN." According to them, the school, established alongside the Nigerian Arabic Language Village, Ngala, Borno State and the Nigerian French Language, Badagry, Lagos, has been singled out for proscription, despite its cultural values to the Nigeria. The traditional rulers, led by two Senators from Abia State, Senators Enyininnya Abaribe (PDP, Abia South) and Nkechi Nwogu (PDP, Abia Central), presented their complaints to the Senate Committee on Education, under the chairmanship of Senator Joy Emordi. In an address presented on their behalf by Eze Ananaba, they said, "it may interest you to know that NINLAN is the only Institute out of the three set up to find solution to the language needs of Nigeria that has an enabling law Act 117 Cap N50, yet the only one to be scrapped and the only one for indigenous languages. "We thought that with the pronouncement of the Minister at the last National Council on Education at Katsina in December, 2007 and directives of the Senate Committee on Education, that the autonomy of the Institute be restored, justice had already arrived, but it is like justice is evasive, as the Minister of Education seems to be helpless in carrying out the orders of the Senate." © Copyright 2000-2008 Leaders & Company Limited **************************** Disclaimer ****************************** Copyright: In accordance with Title 17, United States Code Section 107, this material is distributed without profit for research and educational purposes.
