Following a roundtable of stakeholders on the development of a language policy aimed at sustaining the country's 500 languages, which was organised by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) recently, the Council has inaugurated a 21-member National Technical Committee on the Development of a National Language Policy. Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Godswill Obioma, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja yesterday said it has three months to develop a Draft National Policy, which should lead to the production of "a Language Policy for Nigeria that is comprehensive, simple, well articulated, well structured, implementable and acceptable nationally." The committee is chaired by a Board member of the NERDC and President of the Linguistic Association Nigeria (LAN), Prof. Halliru A. Amfani. Other members, representing the six geo-political zones were drawn from the French and Arabic Language Villages, NERDC, LAN members in universities and colleges of education, other professional experts as well as the Ministries of Education, Information and Culture and Tourism. Amfani said the committee will consult with stakeholders in the six-geopolitical zones for input into the document. -- **************************** Disclaimer ****************************** Copyright: In accordance with Title 17, United States Code Section 107, this material is distributed without profit for research and educational purposes.
