As most Nigerian languages are going into extinction, the Nigerian
Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), has inaugurated a
committee to produce a language policy for Nigeria that is comprehensive,
simple, well articulated, well structured, implementable and acceptable
nationally. Speaking at the inauguration recently at its Sheda Headquarters,
the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Godswill Obioma said that the
committee was expected among other things, to strategise and work out
modalities for developing the draft national language policy within the
stipulated period, develop a detailed work plan, including budget as well as
procedures for the activity, and produce a language policy for Nigeria that
is comprehensive, simple, well articulated, well structured, implementable
and acceptable nationally.

According to him, the committee, referred to as National Technical Committee
on Development of Language, was formed at the roundtable comprising experts
and informed critical stakeholders representing Nigeria's geo-political
zones, relevant federal ministries, language institutions, government
agencies, academic and language associations, adding that the NERDC would
give all the support needed by the committee to execute its assignment. In a
speech, the committee chairman, Prof. Halliru Ahmed Amfani, who is also the
president, Linguistic Association of Nigeria, on behalf of the committee,
thanked NERDC for the initiative and promised that it would work hard to
ensure that the aim of the initiative was achieved.

When the assignment is completed and duly signed into law by the National
Assembly, Nigeria will have few languages that would be regarded as national
languages, while efforts would be made to preserve other Nigerian languages
that may not form the common national languages.
