Consciousness mixmuxes structure with protocol with language thus modulating the relationship between symbol complexity and communication complexity in an environment of agents. And conscious agents regulate symbol entropy in effect maintaining a symbol negentropy. The agents route symbols based on consciointelligent routing. Conscious agents are arguably more efficient routers of structure thus supporting system coherence and multiparty intelligence.
A particular dimensional view of it could be akin to a Deep Switching/Muxing/Routing :) Pundits might say, ya well all that can be done without "consciousness". A system of p-zombie agents would behave exactly the same. But how would you know? And, why would we want to send an AGI to human school (assuming humans are conscious)? Just send it to a robot school and/or suck up the internet. Also, a system of cooperating conscious agents may have a super-optimized communication network. Why? Coordinating internal models allow for fast communication and more systemic control and prediction. Example, an improvising jazz trio. Symbols flow, are created, are anticipated, coordinated, entropied and exhausted. Pundits might say - ya well we can create the trio without consciousness. Well then what would the human audience think? Can you predict their conscious reactions? No. You can simulate but not fully predict and experience.
