All cases of "known and unknown" were meant to refer to what "a reasonable 
player" or more stringently to "what an officer in that position" should
reasonably know or be paying attention to.  For "wholly unknown" read
"hard to find, generally not known or discoverable, and not pointed out
by anyone".  -G.
