Herald's History Corner:
Until 2006, the continuity of the game was vested with the Speaker. The
speaker COULD NOT deregister or otherwise cease being a player, so if the
game went dark/silent, the Speaker could restart it at any time. (Of course,
if the Speaker were the only player, e could change said rule to dissolve
the game).
There was sufficient paranoia on always having a speaker, that there was a
succession order. There was an elected office (Speaker-elect), who would
become the Speaker automatically if the Speaker left. Further, there was
an entire, automatic line of succession for Speaker-elect:
the Promotor
the Registrar
the Rulekeepor
the Assessor
the Justiciar
the Clerk of the Courts
all Officers in order of most recent registration
all Active Players in order of most recent registration
Naturally, making this succession self-contradictory was the subject of at
least one set of CFJs resulting in the electee to the office and holder of
the office being different (most of CFJs 1329-1340).
The "game continuity vested in the Speaker" concept was replaced, in 2006,
with Deputization, so that if the Speaker was required to do something and
didn't, any player could - although this would fail if everyone ceased being
a player and for some reason no-one could register (currently possible).
