This could be because ESD (the GNOME sound daemon) is running -- try running killall -9 esd in a terminal a few times, until you get the ``no such process'' message, then try running AudioQuake and let us know if that works. Hope this helps! P.S. Do you find Orca sufficient to get your work done in GNOME? How does it compare to VoiceOver or HAL/Window-Eyes/JAWS?
