Knowing he was not chosen as a vice finance minister, Finance Ministry head
of fiscal policy Anggito Abimanyu will officially resign from the ministry
on May 24 to return as a lecturer in his hometown of Yogyakarta.

He "proudly" and "professionally" filed his resignation after learning the
State Palace chose Anny Ratnawati, the ministry's director general of
budget, over him despite the fact he had been promised the position since
six months ago.

There is no explanation yet from the palace why Anggito was overlooked as a
vice finance minister or even a finance minister, while he was named as a
strong candidate to replace former finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati
who will serve the World Bank starting June 1.

Instead, Bank Mandiri President Director Agus Martowardojo was installed as
the new finance minister on Thursday, along with Anny.

"I resign because my professional pride is irritated ... Another position
offering will not affect my professional decision to resign," said Anggito
who wants to return to the Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta.

He said he already talked about his resignation to Agus, who said he
respected Anggito's decision.

On Thursday Mulyani also said she respected Anggito's decision.

Even though Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa, also
chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN), expressed his disappointment
over Anggito's resignation, Anggito explained: "(Hatta) made an assessment
and he said I should not be allowed to resign. But I have my rights."

PAN and the Golkar Party were known to favor Anggito to become a finance
minister upon hearing Mulyani's leaving early this month.

Anggito did not directly state that he was disappointed with the palace. He
only said now he had found the answer he had been looking for.

In January he signed a pact of integrity to become a vice finance minister
but failed to become one due to an administrative matter. But within a week
his civil servant rank was raised to echelon 1A to be able to become a vice
minister.

"So I wait and I wait ... But if can't be (a vice minister) then I'll return
to UGM, where I'll be greeted with red carpet," he said.

"It's the President's prerogative right (to install officials). I resign
because there's a vice minister now and certainty of what I've been waiting
for," he added.

Rumors spread that Vice President Boediono did not want Anggito to become a
minister or vice minister because of his alleged affiliation with political
parties.

Anggito denied it. "There is no affiliation with political parties. I need
to explain what is alleged by many people in the media is not true," he
said.

Anggito assured that he would not accept another position offering. "I won't
accept it. It's not a winning like what was stated by Mulyani. The winning
is if I refuse the position," he said, referring to Mulyani's statement that
her resignation was a winning because she was "not being dictated".

Asked whether he would serve the government in the future, he simply said
with a smile: "I'll be back."

Salam Hangat
Saumi
