From: [email protected] Subject: [alfa] spider tops in dissuse Modelle says: "The rubber straps that hold the top frame down will chafe holes in the top fabric. I have found that iron-on patches that are used to repair wetsuits work well to reinforce this area. The vinyl boot is an on-again, off-again affair that the plastic clips are not really suited-for. I try to leave it on, but once it gets taken off, it tends to stay off and the top fabric gets sun- faded on the inside."
Interesting; I almost never remember to use them, then break them when I forget they're hooked and pull the top up. But my not-using them has allowed the top to jiggle as the car hits bumps, abrading points where it rubs against itself. I reinforced the abrasions with black Shoe-Goo and that's worked for years. Incidentally, my top is 13 years old and still in great shape, due at least in part to my using Renovo convertible stuff on the fabric every few years, and Meguiars plastic polish on the rear window.
