Steve, starting from the beginning, by any chance does the rattle go away when you press down on the clutch pedal? If so, that's the release/throw-out bearing - which of course has no relation to the bearings on the clutch shaft.

Assuming that didn't make the rattle go away - (sorry Russ) - you don't need a 'new'/later driveshaft, though it is very difficult to get the donuts for it, especially the rear one for the early driveshaft. Your smaller yoke (which attaches to the rear of the driveshaft) will fit the later tapered clutch shaft. I'm 'pretty sure' you will need the later clutch housing, and you'll definitely need the clutch shaft/flywheel unit from the later one. The later flywheels are identical to the early ones - except - the four bolts holding the shaft to the flywheel are larger.

I'd check or have your mechanic check with APE to see if they have the later clutch housing with the shaft and flywheel.

Should you stick with your early driveshaft, and that the clutch unit comes with the later somewhat larger yoke, I'd be interested in the yoke if the splines are pristine.

Good luck on it,
