where most important part is:
./a.out: error while loading shared libraries: libz.so.1: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
I can successfully build this part by hand. What is the problem with
jhalfs (using jhalfs-trunk revision 3800)?

The problem may not be jHALFS. I build 7.5 systemd and 7.6 RC1 systemd
with jHALFS r3800 and do not have that problem.
Although, we can't rule out that jHALFS is perfect and that some valid
host configurations could affect it.
You may have a host configuration issue. How is jHALFS configured and
did you start it with a normal user. What is your host OS and does it
meet the requirements for building with jHALFS? Did you edit any of
the lfs commands?
