You may have a host configuration issue. How is jHALFS configured
and did you start it with a normal user. What is your host OS and
does it meet the requirements for building with jHALFS? Did you edit
any of the lfs commands?

Since the issue is with zlib, with debian systems I do install the
zlib1g-dev package. I haven't had errors with debian systems as well
with jHALFS in the past. You may want to install that package and test
again.
Sincerely,
William Harrington
