Ah cause this mic is also for mounting on a DSLR. OR like I said it's to
give you the option to use it with somethign like Gena's H1N which
doesn't have XLRs. But don't worry about that little cable if you don't
want. Keep it handy though. Also you get a double A batery. Again for
when using it with that 3.5 jack. Yeah I just meant t you could use it
into the headphone jack like jack on the side of the XY H6. The main
peace with the 2 barral like mics. How ever you don't have to nor do I.
Just saying the option is there especially if you don't happen to have a
sighted neighbor even to get the levels right. But when your wife is
arround you should for best results ask her to put the nobs on the same
number. Again this so that the panning is balanced.

Hi again Hamit.
I thought that this particular microphone would meet my needs.
I still have your advice regarding twinning each XLR as one input.
Neil also explained this in his podcast.
However you said "It also comes with a
little mini XLR to headphone jack plug so you could use it with the
X^Y H6 "
What do you mean by this?
The Zoom H6 has a headphone socket and I've enough XLR's to cope with
this, but why this additional accessory?
Very best wishes.
Andy.

It's an Audio-Technica. That's why the AT. It's a stereo mic so it's
actually 2 XLRs that would go into the H6 or F8N in your case. Now
you'd have to stereo link them like I told you on the H6 and however
you stereo link on the F8N or any of the F recorders. It also comes
with a little mini XLR to headphone jack plug so you could use it
with the X^Y H6 peace too or on something like Gena's H1N.

Hi Hamit.
this Road AT-8022, is it an Xlr or an USB mic.
I ask because on Accessible Youtube a guy was doing rather nice
outdoor recordings in a city in America, and I've heard Neil say
that he has the same mic, though I rather think he has a USB type.
If I'm correct and you can get both, then my problems are over for
the AT-8022 as I can record bird calls and also indoor quire or my
local band in my pub.
Also, is the NT1 an XLR or USB?
I ask because I like your setup of having 2 factory sets for my band
and quire, though, I don't know how good it is for out of doors.
Very best wishes.
I simply don't have information to be confident in spending that
amount of cash.

Ah then yeah depending on how much you can spend the NT1 or older
and crisper NT1-A are a no go as you'd need 2 and you'd need to
link them together on either zoom. I could tell you how and infact
since then I'll recommend my AT-8022 since it is 1 mic with 2
modded AT-4021 capsels in it it'll show up as 2 seperate mics. So
what you do is connect the left XLR into either the front left or
right plug on the H6. The right 1 goes in the XLR towards the back
of therecorder. So the XLR closer to the card reader if you wana
use the left side. Closer to the lever for the menus if the right.
Now you have to use the buttons that are numbered 1 threw 4. If you
use the left side of the recorder you hold down the button 1 which
is to the right of the R button. So it's the third button on the
recorder. Whilst doing this press the 1 to it's right. Now you have
linked them in stereo. Have someone to see? Because I recommend
doing all this work so you use the XLRs and phantum power to get
the most of the 8022.

Hi all.
Getting more confused as the day goes on.
The Road NT1 is a no-no as I normally listen to sounds in sterio -
it's just the way I am. Perhaps the NT1 is a fantastic Podcast
microphone, but just about everything that I'm keen on recording
requires a degree of width,
I'm totally not interested in recording a single bird, though I
can see the attraction if making a collection of birds inone
country or area.
Know, for a down chorus I'd be looking for a sterio outdoor
microphone with a wide spread.
For example, here is a sample of my own International Dawn Chorus,
recorded at my farm on the 3 May, using the Zoom H6 with the clip
on right angle microphone.
Can you guess what is wrong with my recording?
https://www.sendspace.com/file/ox1jos
I have now purchased the newer Zoom F8n and wish a XLR sterio
Microphone with a very good Dead Cat because my place is about 300
feet above the River Clyde, so is rather windy. - What do they use
in Texas???
Hamit suggests that if the Nt1 is not for me, then perhaps I
should look at the NT4. So I looked it up in Accessable Youtube .
It's about £600 and is a USB microphone, which I think would make
it a good podcasting microphone, for a home studio computer.
So I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment and need to give it a lote
more consideration.
Perhaps I can find out what I'm looking for using the link: How to
Record Bird Songs and Calls - Nature Recording | Audubon, provided
earlier today by Gena.
Very best wishes.
Andy.

Hello John,
Fare point, as Andrew had done some research and considered that a
shotgun might be the solution I thought he was wanting to focus
upon one bird or those birds in a small area. As I pointed out the
pickup area is shown as a heart shape. The number of channels does
not express the polar pattern. If Andrew wants to record a wide
stage then that is an omnidirectional microphone he requires. Not
a stereo unless it is omnidirectional. Of course, if andrew wants
that binaural affect then again it is something else. Thus there
are plenty of options for Andy and many choices and it is for him
to decide what the end result is that he requires. i.e. What size
stage does Andy want?
There is a youtube reviewer of microphones who dances around the
microphones so you can hear the extent of the pattern.

I had a look at the link. Most bird watchers want to focus-record
an individual bird song sometimes out of many background songs. A
dawn Chorus is all the birds in the area - not just a single
bird. As Hamit suggests a stereo mike might be more likely to do
this successfully.
PS: last time I heard Andy was living in rural Scotland, so maybe
not a big garden, but a lot of habitat. I know birds are
territorial, but they tend to sing from adjoining gardens to, and
I'm sure Andy isn't so possessive he only wants the birds singing
in just his garden alone. You'll find a dawn chorus is just as
big weather heard from a small garden or an estate for that very
reason. 😉

Hello John,
They don’t cut out sharply it’s usually shown as a heart shape
tapering down to the point. Obviously, Andy has done some
research and his post caused me to do so as I use a shotgun in
the booth. Andy did not want ambient sound. He wanted to record
bird song from his garden. Unless he lives in a huge estate it is
not going to be that wide of a field. I found that bird watchers
use a shotgun mic although this is with a camera. Even
professional sound recordist uses a shotgun. See this:

From what I've read a shot-gun mike is so directional that even
being off-target a little will result in poor quality sound. I
doubt it would be the best for ambient recordings.

Hello Andy,
It is down to you and how much you want to spend. I follow the
Booth Junky who uses a shotgun microphone a lot. He uses the
Sennheiser MKH-416. I haven’t been able to afford one of those
but I do have the MKH-166 which I purchased used from eBay. I
absolutely love it and is my mic of choice. I think that would
really do the job.

Hi all.
I've got both the Zoom H6 and the F8n, but the only microphones
I have are the 2 clip on ones that I origionally got with the H6.
I'm wanting to record the Dawn Chorus in my garden but don't
have a clue as to which microphone , or best type, to buy and
where to buy it.
I think I need a directional Shot-gun microphone with a large
Dead-Cat windscreen, and also about 3 meters of cable with the
appropriate XLR plugs.
Can anyone please give me some advice.
Also, My Zoom H6 is playing up. I think I've changed an
inportant option within the menues. I tried recording bird
calls and the recording was extremely poor. Is there perhaps a
function within the H6 that Re-sets the device back to factory
settings.
I hope you are all okay and enjoying this period of noise
pelution silence to get very nice recordings. If so I'd love to
here some samples.
Very best wishes and please take care of yourselves.
