Tom, I think folks are leaving out some keystrokes here.

After you open preferences with control P and press home to go to the top of the tree, your screen reader will say that general is either collapsed or expanded.  You can expand or collapse any of the tree branches with the right or left arrow keys.  There are five levels to the tree trunk; To get a feel for it, first see that the general branch is collapsed.  Then down arrow to the next branch on the trunk (media library).  If it's not collapsed, do it using the left arrow.  Continue down the trunk, down arrow to the third and fourth branches (skins and plug-ins) checking to be sure they are all collapsed.  The bottom choice on the trunk (error feedback) is not a branch, but opens a dialog.

Now that all branches are collapsed and you just have the trunk, go back to the top, general.  Right arrow to expand it.  Now you have a list of seven items that stick out from the general (main branch.  These are not branches, but dialogs. You can tab around each of these dialogs until you get back to its name.  Unlike most windows dialog boxes, when you tab into them, the first item is close.  When you finish making any changes to the winamp system, use one of these close button to close preferences and return to the winamp main screen.

Each of these seven dialog boxes has several items (check boxes, radio buttons, etc.) you can change to make changes in the way winamp functions.  As there is no OK button, using the close button will probably save any changes you have made.

If you have questions, feel free to ask.  I'm sure others here can answer as well, or better, than I.  Good luck.

Howard

Iti's curious though as mine can connect to the internet but doesn't
spontaneously bring up any web pages. I mentioned earlier that Tom should look
for some more specific setting in preferences that might be causing this to
happen as he said he does want to use it for streams and such ... winamp can
still play a few of them. I only looked in general so far (feel free to search
the other areas of preferences to see if there's anything you can turn off)...I
have the check for updates off, splash screen off, and report anonymous usage
statistics off.

Tom, open up Winamp and use the keystroke Control+P to get to the properties of
the player as was mentioned several posts ago.
Now, use your Home key to get to the top of the treelist which should be
General Preferences Opened (if you are not there after using the Home key, then
arrow until you hear that being read).
Now Tab to
Always connected (LAN, DSL, Cable) and arrow down until you get to Not
connected to the internet and hit the Escape key to close the Properties.

If you do not like the outcome of that choice, then do it again putting it back
to the selection that it was before changing it by doing it in the reverse
direction because Properties will already be placed at the same location when
you reopen them making it more convenient.

Let us know if this helped the situation or not if you do not mind.

Yes, that is precisely the information I was interested in receiving and it
does not sound as if though you actually do have the mini-browser opened which
I would assume you did otherwise it would have not been sending you to
whichever site when you first opened it unless you just did not say the
mini-browser which I doubt.

So I am honestly not at all sure of why it is sending you to the site that it's
sending you to.

Okay...now that I realized that I was doing '"alt-tab" (instead of "control
tab) I think I'm on the right track now, so with control-tab, I find that Winamp library,
Winamp editor and main window are open; hopefully this is the information you need to know!

OK, this sounds like you do not have any other tabs so to speak open in Winamp
which are actually necessary for us to use the player/program. Unless you did
not try Control+Tabbing to see (you did not mention it at all if you did).

So instead of Alt+T to toggle the mini-browser tab, try Alt+W to open up the
main window of the player and see then if you can Control+Tab to it after
toggling it.

Here are a list of keystrokes along with the window/tab that will be opened or
closed/toggled.

Alt+W Toggle Main Window.

Alt+E Toggle Playlist Editor.

Alt+G Toggle Equalizer.

Alt+T Toggle Mini-browser.

Alt+S Go to Skin selection.

Ctrl+P Go to Preferences.

With Winamp in focus (which it is as it usually is the only window that is open when I
open Winamp, I hit alt-T (as I am pretty sure this is what you said) but on my machine,
with Winamp open, "alt-T" does absolutely nothing! Tell me what it is I'm
missing here?

With Winamp in focus, Control+Tab through to see which tabs it is that you
actually have opened and if you can not Control+Tab then your focus is not at
Winamp.

So figure out how you can get Winamp actually in focus and do the Control+Tab
to see which tabs are actually opened and write them down here for us so we can
see more of what is what.

suggestions? Thanks!

When Winamp opens try just using the keystroke of
Alt+T to close that specific tab which is a mini-browser tab which is not
necessary to be opened before one can use Winamp which I am guessing is what is
causing this page to be opened.

You may want to Control+Tab to cycle through whichever other tabs you have open
before closing the mini-browser to make sure that you still will actually have
other tabs open so you will not accidentally close the only open tab causing
different problems.

Hello Joe and list: Okay...I decided to try what you have said about this problem of
having a webpage pop up whenever I open Winamp; I don't do well with tree views, so what
I need from you are step by step instructions (that even I will understand) that'll tell
me where this "disable network thingy is, for I'm just not seeing it and I don't
want to totally screw something up! I know that with Winamp, wherever you close out is
where you'll come back to when you re-open Winamp again, so like I said, I need complete,
step-by-step" instructions on how to navigate this tree view, so I can stop this
thing from bringing up that dang webpage! Sure...I can get rid of it quick enough, but I
don't want it popping up at all as this just creates a step that I don't need to be
bothered with! Thanks in advance!

Hello Tom,

when you have closed the browser, and winamp is displayed, press control-p for
preferences, go to general at the top of the tree view, then disable network
access.

That should, should, fix it.

HTH.
