Hmmm... your answer made me investigate how Calc and Excel compare regarding
cut/copy and paste behavior.

Excel maintains an active clipboard selection, along with the "crawling ants",
until the user performs any editing or starts a new selection. Once the user
types something into a cell, the clipboard is cleared and the crawling ants
disappear.

Actually this is incorrect behavior which differs from the standard cut & paste
behavior in most applications. When users cut/copy data to the clipboard they
expect it to stay there...

However Excel can use the (proprietary) Office Clipboard, which maintains a
history of cut and copied items. I'm not sure how many people actually use the
Office Clipboard or are even aware of it, but personally I don't use it.

Calc, on the other hand, behaves correcly - the contents of the clipboard is
maintained until the user clears it. So this is an advantage for Calc, at least
for people who don't use any special clipboard enhancements.

The remaining question is, as you've correctly pointed out, how long to show the
crawling ants? In my opinion the answer is:

Until the user edits any cell, or starts a new selection.
