Not really, but what's [Xorg,XFree86].log reporting? assuming you have fontconfig and the desktop session you are running is gnome you'd be able to change the UI font by running gnome-font-properties. A different workaround is to enable a font substitution in OO.o (Tools/Options/Fonts). Replace "Andale Sans UI" with your favorite UI font. Don't worry if you don't have "Andale Sans UI" the substitution works though.
