What you (grsingleton) want is an option to install OOo alongside an existing
one.

For this matter it is irrelevant whether this version is a beta or rc or final
version. The native installer defaults to update (=replace) the old
installation. Having a parallel install is not yet implemented, thus this cannot
be a defect.

issue 52695 describes this request perfectly.

Having two releases with the same major-version, and both having
system-integration never was possible. Only one version can have system
integration. You cannot assign filetypes to two different versions in windows,
etc. Thus you almost certainly won't like to have two quickstarters running.

you also don't seem to understand a release candidate.
A release candidate is a version that, when it passed qa will be the final
version *unmodified*. Thus the rc /has/ to do whatever the final version should
do.

If you're gonna play that issue pingpong game (resetting the type, etc) with the
other issue as with this one, I'll ask to have your IZ-privileges removed
because of abuse.

###############
To summarize:
Installing versions of the same major along with an older version currently is
not possible using the UI since it is not implemented.
To add this feature, new code has to be programmed. This makes it a RFE, not a
Defect. The decision whether defect or RFE is only taken by this objective
measure, not by subjective feelings.

Code is there, but doesn't do *what it was intended to do* → Defect.
Code not there yet → RFE

yossy_takeuchi gave a perfect explanation on how to do this manually until such
mechanism is built into the UI/the installer.
