As the wiki seems not to be available, I'm going to put my comments here...

To answer cristian's question I finished a first HTML version of the
"first_draft" design even if I remarked John's upload in the meantime.

I uploaded the page to http://why.openoffice.org/index_bedipp.html (after a
wrong click at index.html - sorry for that).

It's not at all finished, but I used percentage values for the larger graphic
(even if it causes the browser to load more slowly), so it is smaller on 800x600
and not maximized windows. I wasn't able to move the table on the right hand
side upwards (I'm just learning basic HTML), but the header should be a bit
smaller... Every graphic (even the large one) is linked to a (not yet existing)
subpage and I added a few explanationary words as title to every link.

As long as we don't have any better graphics we could use the ones from
OpenClipart and replaces them ASAP.

@John: Thanks for updating my draft! Only with different approaches we'll
finally find the best way.

But let me tell you, why I think, this draft should not be the final one.

I started like you with the seven categories at the bottom and the
great/free/easy links to the right. But I found these positions too static - so
I made a circle with the icons.

"Why!" and OpenOffice.org in the same line makes me stumble a bit while reading,
that's the reason why I splitted it to two lines.

>From my POV the page should not be mainly white - larger colored areas are more
attractive at the first sight, but that's just my personal opinion.

IMHO the sreenshot is too small to recognize anything on it and - as the largest
object on the page - it tells only: "OpenOffice.org looks similar to MS Office".
I'd present it on one of the subpages.

The "Click here" statement should be replaced by a design that tells the visitor
of the page that this is a clickable link - in the moment a certaion amount of
visitors will read the first line on the page and end up clicking "Click here"
before they had a closer look to the other patrs of the page.

What do you think of moving the 7 categories to the lower right corner as
circle, adding two or three items to a "short-time ads" area in the right upper
corner ?

Just an idea - it's too late at night to try it out.

Best
Bernhard
