Thanks again. Have installed jEdit - looks very good.

Revised summary does not seem to describe problem correctly.

With revised understanding, here is what seems to be happening:
- template path is correctly set to single user defined path, call this [tpath]
- writer sometimes uses the default path [dpath] (?defect)
- on startup, writer reads all existing templates in dpath and tpath and lists
them under My Templates (?defect - only templates in default tpath should be
listed)
- File>New>Templates and Documents sees all the templates and a new document can
be based on any of them (OK)
- File>Templates>Edit sees only the templates in the tpath (OK but inconsistent
with the other commands)
- File>Templates>Save puts a new template into dpath (?defect - should use tpath
as per previous command)
- File>Templates>Organise sees templates in tpath and dpath (?defect - should
see only those in tpath)
- File>Templates>Organise>Commands>New creates a new directory in tpath and
templates moved into these directories can be seen with File>Templates>Edit (OK,
except ?defect it's not possible to move a new template into the root of tpath
because there is no category for that)

The basic problem thus seems to be that Writer mixes up templates from dpath and
tpath in My Templates, does not handle My Templates consistently and does not
allow a category reflecting the root of tpath to be created. Also, there seems
to be no way of viewing/configuring the dpath setting. There is more than one
way to resolve this, but it needs to be consistent, complete and easy to use.
