@all : further info
I've just noticed that some of the tables in my remote mysql db will display
within OOo (I had to go through about 20 to find one that was readable via OOo)
when I try to open them in the ODB document, if, and only if, the tables in
question are empty, i.e. they contain absolutely no data.

The tables with data in already, and which are writable by the same user with
the same id/pwd from a remote machine via myODBC, are totally inaccessible via
the JDBC bridge from OOo Mac PPC, hence the error message. Repeated attempts to
access these tables eventually causes OOo to crash (anywhere between 5 and 10
attempts)
